Oooh arrr yaaa...

I am aware of the advert with Paul Whitehouse for some insurance company which pokes fun at The Pilgrims, but I want to redress the balance and show some love to the UK’s most southern and western club. (It’s like country and western but with more pies.)

They are having a torrid time in the old Division 2 and are currently (at the time of writing) anchoring the table – but they have two more points than Pompey !

With thanks to The Rev, a loyal and long suffering Argyle supporter who mentioned this in a comment on another post and then supplied the following.
Amongst these is a tribute song to not that a well known ex-player. Today we are going to rectify that.

The singer of these tunes chose an…interesting name for himself and sadly there is nothing out there to give me any more information. Weird that a musical act should have no web presence, I assume then that these were probably done before the internets was born.

As mentioned there’s a tribute song done for a Plymouth midfielder and I’m surprised that this one was done because according to this Wikipedia entry he was only there for a short time:

Barrie Emmanuel Vassallo (born 3 March 1956, Newport, Wales, UK) is a Welsh-Maltese former professional football midfielder. He represented Wales at the schools’ level. He was most recently manager of Chepstow Town F.C.

Vassallo began his career as an apprentice at Arsenal, turning professional in May 1973. He failed to break into the first team at Highbury, moving to Plymouth Argyle in November 1974 for a fee of £10,000. His appearances at Argyle were limited by the presence of Paul Mariner in the Pilgrims’ side, Vassallo only making 13 league appearances (7 of which were as substitute), scoring twice, before leaving for Aldershot.

Listening to the song again it may be tongue in cheek but you never know with these.

Barrie Vassalo » Dave Banana and the Bananarettes – Barrie Vassallo (What A Guy)

» Dave Banana – I Saw Them Play (Radio Edit)

» Dave Banana – I Saw Them Play (Extra Time)

Saving the best ones til last:

» Dave Banana and the Bananarettes – Pasties From Cornwall

» Dave Banana and the Bananarettes – Pasties from Ginsters

Sorry…? Oh go on then.

  1. One of those two goals came in the 3-1 home defeat to Everton in the FA Cup fourth round in 1975, and was shown as a feature match on Match of the Day. In a season that would eventually see Argyle promoted from Division 3, it’s typical that the nation saw us dispatched with relative ease – and saw “veteran goalie Jim Furnell” have an absolute mare. Barrie’s goal was a bit special though – hence its third place in Goal of the Month!

  2. Best football song EVER – 2004; Devonport End; I was there – Argyle are the Championies!!!!! Should be played at every home game……..Trigger – ‘enry of the West Country. GreensRus
