World Cup Qualifier double header coming up this Saturday and the following Wednesday.
I have an ambitious plan to try and do a double post of stuff relating to each international team… we’ll see how that pans out…

I’d like to include something linked to the Wales team, but as mentioned before I’ve got bugger all here.
So this is another appeal to all the Wales supporters – Have either of you got anything ? If you have contact me via the about page.

For now though we’ll start with the England and one of the 29 singles that was released in time for the 2006 World Cup (held in Germany)

The 2006 England Team

– This particular track was done by a notable artist who I fondly remember from his Stiff days. He rewrote and re-recorded probably the most famous song that Wreckless Eric is known for:

» Wreckless Eric – Whole Wide World 4 England
Wreckless Eric 2006

– The B Side/other track was “Wayne Rooney’s Foot”. If you remember from back then, the special needs kid fractured a metatarsal bone just weeks before the finals.

Of course if we have the newer version there’s got to be the original:

» Wreckless Eric – (I’d Go The) Whole Wide World
Wreckless Eric 1977

– –

The song is a much covered one:

…since the redone Whole Wide World was about England going to Germany, here is the previously featured Die Toten Hosen:

» Die Toten Hosen – Whole Wide World

… The reformed (1986) Monkees and their pretty much note-for-note cover. I think it’s Dolenz on the vocals:

» The Monkees – Whole Wide World

… next one is from 1999 and an electronic makeover given to it by Laptop:

» Laptop – Whole Wide World

– –

Finally let’s go back to the beginning…

Wreckless is still going. He met and married fellow musician Amy Rigby & they have wrote and recorded together.

Here is a video with the both of them performing live last December in Dallas, Texas:

There is one more cover version, which will be up next with the Scotland post.
