I promise to resume the regular postings soon. Before that though yet another pod. The theme of this one is that all of these song have a football title, but none of them are actually about the beautiful game.

  1. The Undertones – When Saturday Comes
Not actually about the anticpation of going to a match, but about going out on a Saturday night and finding a girl. But – it did inspire those to name their football fanzine/magazine after the song. Even though it is not about…
  2. Club 8 – Football Kids
Swedish band, still going. In the opening lyrics: “Do you ever get tired of the football kids/With their sporty styles…” but no other mention of football after that.
  3. Collapsed Lung – I May Not Know The Score But…
The band known for… I don’t have to tell you. This is a track from their 1st album which also had a football reference in the title: Jackpot Goalie, but this track isn’t about that. The term ‘may not know the score’ in this case meaning ‘I don’t know the current situation…’
  4. Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros – Tony Adams
Joe once introduced this song as being about ‘a catastrophe hitting New York‘, but this was written years before September 11th. Includes the baffling lyrics: “Who is that screaming in Lunar Park? If they make Tony Adams captain/We could all go screaming in Lunar Park”
  5. John MOuse – Robbie Savage
This one is not at all about the average footballer and terrible pundit. It comes from a mishead lyric in the song: “Macho Man Randy Savage is frozen in mid air.” Find out more of the band here.
  6. The Badgers – Glenn Hoddle’s Ghost
Once again like the above track this has absolutely nothing to do with the footballer (or his ghost). Nothing else is known about the band or the song. First discovered this epic song via a post on The (new) Vinyl Villian by Micky Hazard (No not that one. At least I think not…)
  7. Glasvegas – Flowers and Football Tops
The subject of this track is a sad one. James Allan, the lead singer and guitarist, wrote it about the murder of Kris Donald in 2004.
  8. Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros – Shaktar Donetsk
Another one from Strummer and a purporseful mispelling of the actual team name ? (Shakhtar Donetsk). The song laments the fate of refugees, seeking an illegal haven in England, who suffocated in a smuggler’s truck. »Reference (scroll down, near the bottom)
  9. Kirsty MacColl – England 2 Columbia 0
Like the mighty song by The Hitchers this is also not about football but about relationships.
  10. The Kites – Play
A very tenuous link here and poor excuse by me to include it just because of the title. That could mean anything.
  11. McLusky – There Ain’t No Fool In Ferguson
Absolutely nothing to do with the retired football manager. This song is like a musical version of a Fergie hairdryer though.
  12. The Smiths – Frankly, Mr Shankly
I could have gone with Mozza’s Roy’s Keen but we’ve aleady had Fergie and that’s enough. This song obviously not about the legendary Liverpool manager but about the Rough Trade label boss Geoff Travis

  1. A top, top post. Some blinding tunes on here, and a neat concept; songs that allude to football but aren’t anything to do with football. I wonder how many other subjects this would work for…
