Well what can we say… the best team won in the end.

Not the best final obviously, but they never are. These things are always built up, hyped up so much that if we don’t see an end-to-end five goals to four thriller then we are disappointed. It’s usually the matches that are played to get themselves into the final are the ones better remembered.

But in Spain’s case it was a stuttering start followed by two matches with 2 goals to the good, and then a 1-nil, 1-nil, 1-nil, 1-nil in the final. A steady and a very careful course to the title. That’s the thing with the World Cup Final, it’s too a big thing to lose. There was a very close, two minutes left chance that it would have gone to pens and then it would have been a lottery. But thankfully it was Spain who took charge of their own destiny. As I said not pretty, but in the end… the best team:

Ah the poor kid… Who hasn’t been in that position of being in a World Cup Semi and having that opportunity to guarantee their appearance in the Final… Who hasn’t…

Well ok none of us have.

I mean if it was you in that same sort of scenario in a pub match for insta… I’ll stop myself there. As if anything like that would happen to any of us.

Maybe it was something with the in-form player seeing the out-of-form Torres waiting for the pass and some inexperience or over confidence thinking that he could slot it in himself, rather than risk knocking it to Fernando who might have blasted it over the bar himself. You never know.

I still like this bright light that shone in the match. He was more lively, created opportunities than we saw from the Liverpool striker. I predict that we’ll be hearing more about Pedro next season. But please don’t take my predictions seriously, I don’t have octopus-like abilities. Before this I tipped Germany to go all the way.

So onto some music then… some Spanish songs in relation to the World Cup…

Well compared to England and Germany, who saturated the market with hundreds of musical efforts, sadly there isn’t much of anything out there. But thanks to Ruiz who answered my call when I put out an appeal on Twitter for any Spain/WC songs.

Additionally there’s this one from Ketama who’s song has bugger all to do with football but this track was included on a previous compilation album released to tie in with the tournament. An album like the song that again had bugger all to do with footie. But it’s very catchy and I like it.

I still have more Spain songs, but it all depends on how they do on Sunday…

Before they go into their game against Honduras in a couple of hours their situation is grim.
With Chile winning their 2nd game in Group H it means that Spain obviously have to win.
Hey I’ve just rhymed there…

The question is then – Was the Swiss game just a blip or have they caught that “big” team underperforming bug ? It seems that the pre-ordained World Cup champions let all the hype get to them and nerves set in. Now they’ve seen what others have done, it will be the all business Spain team from now on.

If they do manage to get back on track there’s the choice of Brazil or Portugal for them in the next round.

For now I’m not going to be putting my money on them but there’s a couple of Scotia boys who have…

Extra note: I read some devastating news as I was writing this post, but like Uncle Frank after he learnt of his cancer – the show must go on.

The main reason was because these two were on the bench:

You might not actually recognise him there, but the chap to the left is Fernando Torres, who isn’t blonde any more. (I know that my friend’s wife will be devastated at this news.) This could also be a reason as to why that even after he came on as sub, he wasn’t the same.

What we saw was a modern day re-enactment of Sampson and Delilah.

It’s usually kept quiet as to where the players make their homes in the city, but I know for a fact that Torres has a condominium at Sampson Place in Liverpool – and – right before he flew off for the tournament Fernando visited the Voodoo Hair Colour Centre in Stanley Street… YOU SEE ! YOU SEE !

Not only that but like his mate to the right he’s also got this man fluttering his eyelashes towards him.

Who’s hoping that with the turmoil at Fernando’s current club, he’ll join his compatriot on a flight over to Spain rather than back to the UK after this World Cup has ended.

And what about for Fabregas – what troubles he has:

Every time Cesc looks up there’s Wenger and his boys waving their massive heeeeds at him.

If things don’t buck up for the Spanish team and these two players then they’ll find themselves toiling away with their perennial runner-up clubs back in the Premier League again next season. Poor them.

- As to some associated music err… associated with Spain, it’s that K’naan bloke yet again…

He’s still singing the same song, this time with the Almeria born David Bisbal adding some Spanish vocals to a tune which I don’t mind mentioning again because it is a great track.

I am wondering now if K’naan did a version for every country. If he didn’t he should have done.
What a marketing/promotional opportunity that would have been.

The other day I put a shout out for anyone to email me if they spotted anything related to Spain and Euro 2008. He suggested this video: España PODEMOS! (Podemos means “power”).

From that I discovered that a Spanish television channel is using this music as the theme to their coverage of the tournament.

(Have I mentioned that I adopted the Spanish team and they are the ones I’m following throughout Euro 2008…? Yeah I probably have too many times already. What I also said is that when I looked at the draw, everything was lined up for Germany to be in the finals. If they are I hope that Spain meet them there.
