“Hello! If you’ve just tuned in, welcome to the Eurovision Football Song Contest being held this year in sunny Helsinki.

You have missed some splendid arrangements and who will forget Iceland’s entry with Bjirr Stoppenmajer and his roller skating tribute to mountain climbing… Or that delightful entry from Jimmy the Jump… at least I think it was…

Anyway here for you are some selected highlights…”

… Starting with Invgar ‘Tjotta’ Olsson, with the 1958 entry from Sweden:

The nickname ‘Tjøtta’ was from when he was a kid. He used to say all the time: “I will Tjøtta ball”.
[That word does not translate.]

Last summer I took a look at those doing the impossible job. That of being a referee.

This subject has come up again in Scotland because of some reactions and attitudes towards the match officials.

The recent hullabaloo came about after an Old Firm game in which Neil Lennon, the Celtic manager was very critical of the referee’s decisions after their 1-0 loss. Then after this game that same ref received threatening phone calls.

But it’s not just this one Scottish referee, things are getting problematic for all match officials because of the pressure and criticism levelled at them from not just the team bosses, but the fans and media too.

…Another official, Steven Craven, resigned after criticism of his role in a reversed penalty decision the previous weekend.

And former Fifa referee Kenny Clark believes that people could be put off becoming officials if they are not treated with more respect.

“We’re perhaps heading for a crisis unless people start to recognise that we must ease the pressures being put upon referees,” Clark told BBC Scotland.

“If referees and assistants at the top level choose to resign then it diminishes the pool of officials able to handle matches in the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League.

» Full article

This isn’t the first time there has been refereeing controversy in relation to an Old Firm match, the well known and now retired ex-FIFA referee Hugh Dallas
[pictured above]
, now the Scottish Football Association’s Referee Development Officer, was really on the receiving end of it during a match he officiated in 1999 when he was hit on the head with a coin. After a few minutes treatment he continued in the game but that was only one part of a very controversial match.

As mentioned this was in 1999 and it was May ’99 to be precise. Or even more precise than that – it was the end of the SPL season and this was the very last match (being played at Parkhead) with whoever winning to be crowned league champions.

And seeing only dollar signs in their eyes rather than the danger signs of this crucial decider, $ky Sports decided themselves that it should be a televised match on a Sunday evening…

After a couple of player warnings by Dallas in only the first few minutes, then the coin throwing incident and three players sent off during the game.

Eventually the match was won by Rangers who took the championship.

In the aftermath of the game a brick was thrown through a window at Hugh Dallas’s home, and any future Old Firm league matches to be played in the early afternoon. Plus the possibility of an Old Firm title decider has been avoided.

A few years later Dallas wrote about his experiences of refereeing an Old Firm game. And sadly he’s recently been in the headlines again.

- A few years ago the Glasgow band Mogwai named a song after him which was included on an anthology from Matador Records:

- To counteract and add some balance to this quite serious post… A few months back e-rawk emailed and pointed me to a video of a classical music piece by Dmitri Shostakovich, the Russian composer who was a certified referee. He regularly went to watch Zenit Leningrad, now renamed FC Zenit Saint Petersburg – who have recently been in the new because of fan violence after their title win.

Oh I just made things serious again. Listen to some soothing music to calm things down…

I've only just noticed that there's some international friendlies being played midweek. As usual they are a pointless waste of time that will mean nothing to anybody. Because the are not proper competitive qualifiers I'm calling them faux friendlies...

I’ve only just noticed that there’s some international friendlies being played midweek. Well what’s the point of doing that ? Other than filling the F.A.’s wallet to pay for the deeply in debt Wembley of course, but the question still stands – What’s the point of playing this match now when we are knee deep into a season and pretty much nobody (well…mostly the club managers) is interested in these matches. Especially with the ones that England and the Scotia are playing.

I suppose it give the fans a chance to laugh at a team who performed marginally worse than England at the World Cup when they take on France.

It also gives the opportunity for Boothroyd to join Kevin Davis in gaining that one single solitary England cap which will be noted on Wikipedia forever more.

There was a new name called up and he had the traditional reaction upon hearing the news – they pulled out due to injury. As usual though we’ll probably see them fully fit in time for Saturday.

There are also a few others missing (the booing) so it will mean a bit of a Keystone Cops/Three Stooges type performance at the back with (probably) Joe Hart in goal… What he’s going to pick Brum’s Ben Foster or West Ham’s Robert Green…? …and the leaky Man U Ferdinand and/or Smalling at the back, with Gerrard and Barry stinking up the place in the middle and Crouchy hitting air shots all by himself up front.

Since this is a faux forgettable and quite possible embarrassing waste of time for everybody, we might as well have some appropriate music…

» This first one is from 1998 and I bet you didn’t know that: “Radiohead” recorded an England song:

The subject of the song is England’s Brave <strike>captain</strike> John Terry, beloved by all before him…

I say tricky because not matter who your competition is, you can never let your guard down.
Plus in the last match – a Euro 2012 qualifier they held Northern Ireland to a 1-all draw.

Ok they lost their previous two matches 5-0 and 5-1 but still…

The Scotland boss <strike>George Burley</strike> Craig Levein will be fielding pretty much a youth team after Gary Caldwell, James Morrison, Chris Burke,Matthew Gilks, Graham Dorrans, Christophe Berra, Alan Hutton, Steven Whittaker, Steven Naismith, Allan McGregor, David Weir, Kenny Miller, Lee McCulloch… <insert the name of any other Scottish player here> are all out because of injury or some other excuse.

For you the Scotland fans then we have some bangin’ choons… Some big fish/little fish/cardboard box musical crimes applied to some very familiar Scottish songs…

Before they go into their game against Honduras in a couple of hours their situation is grim.
With Chile winning their 2nd game in Group H it means that Spain obviously have to win.
Hey I’ve just rhymed there…

The question is then – Was the Swiss game just a blip or have they caught that “big” team underperforming bug ? It seems that the pre-ordained World Cup champions let all the hype get to them and nerves set in. Now they’ve seen what others have done, it will be the all business Spain team from now on.

If they do manage to get back on track there’s the choice of Brazil or Portugal for them in the next round.

For now I’m not going to be putting my money on them but there’s a couple of Scotia boys who have…

It is with thanks (once again) to The Vinyl Villain for partly being the inspiration for me to start this Football and Music website, for posting some great music that I missed the first time around, and for the PAUL HAIG DAY II event.

It is also thanks to Pat Nevin for giving me a fitba & music connection so I could take part in this day.

Plus it gives me an additional excuse to post more about the man and his excellent taste in music.

The Paul Haig Day II thing I’ll get to in moment, first some more notes on the Scotland, Chelsea and Everton legend – [Pictured above: Pat watches from the touchline as Everton play QPR. Image via Flick photograph by jims_pics]

- In the other post I didn’t give a big enough mention of the fantastic interview that Pat did with
Is This Music? An independent music magazine from Scotland.

In the article Nevin talks at length about his history with football and music – and his interaction with other players who turned out to have similar tastes to him:

“Some more unusual examples of the indie genre made themselves know. “Barry Horne (at the time captain of Wales) was a very hard player, but had the best collection of indie music I’ve ever seen in my life – we’ve got a big fight over who knows more about the Cocteau Twins… Stuart Pearce (another hard man and former England captain) is very punk orientated – I sent him some White Stripes stuff a couple of years ago. But these days it’s mostly Tupac – bog-standard rap, whatever David Beckham’s listening to.”

And Scottish international duty showed that in general players north of the border have just as dubious taste in music – with one exception. “The SFA stuck me in the same room with Brian McClair,” he recounts, and the usual awkward silence ensued. ” ’What’s your name?’ ‘Pat. Yours?’ ‘Brian.’ Silence. So I took an NME out of my bag and started reading it. He took out his copy of Sounds.” Inevitably, the two became good friends.

- Additionally there’s a podcast/audio interview from March 2009 which Pat did with Chelsea In America. In the first 10 minutes of the podcast he talks about his music past, which is also covered in the above Is This Music? article.

To save their bandwidth I’ve mirrored the Pat Nevin/Chelsea In America pod interview here:

Paul Haig Day II

So then to the main reason why we are here…

The first Paul Haig Day was started by JC aka The Vinyl Villain and was something born out of the fustration with Blogger.com and these seemingly random <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act#Takedown_Notice"target="_blank">DCMA takedown notices.
(Which has got much worse as of late with entire blogs disappearing without warning.)

- In March of 2009 he posted an article and a song from Paul Haig. In preparation of that post JC had spoken to Paul Haig’s manager and had even got some thoughts from Haig himself. Then one morning he woke up to find that the post had gone. Blogger had received an DCMA notice (I’m not sure if he knew who and where it came from) claiming that the post was an infringement on their copyright. The problem was that it was Paul Haig who held the copyright for the song and obviously he didn’t send out the DCMA, in fact his manager and encouraged and approved of the posting.

So the idea of a Paul Haig day – again with the backing and approval of the management and of Paul Haig – was created. The aim of the day is to help promote this artist who is showing solidarity and support to these bloggers who in turn help to promote him.

Home taping didn’t kill music and the world wide web isn’t going to either.

To today then and Paul Haig Day II.

As mentioned it is because of Pat Nevin that I found an (admittedly weak) excuse to take part.
The other week when he was guest DJ at <a href="http://www.scaredtodance.co.uk"target="_blank">Scared To Dance, <a href="http://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/playlist.txt"target="_blank">his playlist included many acts that were on Postcard Records, the now defunct Glasgow-based label. One of the songs was by Josef K which was the band that Paul Haig was in before going solo.

A very detailed and impressive read about Josef K/Paul Haig <a href="http://www.ltmpub.freeserve.co.uk/jkbiog.html"target="_blank">can be found here.

My contribution to Paul Haig day then is the track that Pat played – plus the B Side of <a href="http://rateyourmusic.com/release/single/josef_k/sorry_for_laughing___revelation/"target="_blank">that single:

Josef K – Sorry For Laughing

Josef K – Revelation

Late Update: An additional track – direct from the man himself.

I’ve featured music from the beginning of Paul Haig’s career and this bonus song is an exclusive remixed version of the opening track which can be found on his most recent album ‘Relieve’

Paul Haig – Trip Out The Rider (Remix)

As to who remixed the song, you’ll have to go over to The Vinyl Villain to find that out…

- Buy some music via <a href="http://www.rolinc.co.uk/rolcds.html"target="_blank">Paul Haig’s official website.

Postcript notes…
On the Burning Flame Blog it says that Paul Haig’s face has never been seen on any of his record covers. Is this true ? I never knew that…

Before this I was familiar with Paul Haig with his song <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1wLLlbwz3g"target="_blank">Something Good, which I play often and always sing along to at the top of my voice. I really wanted to post this one but I, like the others on this Paul Haig Day, want to give an airing to some of Haig’s other material.

A couple of weeks ago I was puzzled to as to why there was a sudden interest in this Pat Nevin post. As you can see to the right it’s No. 1 on the popular posts. So I did a quick google and found out why.

A quick note before I continue:

This Football and Music website does as it says on the tin – it does have Spurs are on their way to Wembley and it does have Diamond Lights, but it also has a fantastic tune about Strachan and a couple from the legendary John Charles. So you see fitba & music isn’t what you think it is.

Usually when you think of footie and music it is of acertainteam who release a single as soon as they get to a cup final – or of a footballer who as soon as they are in the public eye suddenly want to also be a pop star. Years ago when you read Shoot or Match magazine you would find that some footballer’s favourite artist was Phil Collins or Status Quo.

But there is more than that, not every football player drove a Cortina and had steak for dinner.

Take today’s subject for example. If you read his questions and answers in Shoot you would have seen that he listened to Joy Division and read the NME. No, Pat Nevin wasn’t your usual footballer.

Nick Dunmore from <a href="http://fistedaway.wordpress.com/"target="_blank">Fisted Away posted a comment about reading a story of Nevin asking to be subbed so that he could get to the ICA in time to catch The Cocteau Twins. It might have been an apocryphal account that he read, but part of it was actually true:

“…as the team
[Chelsea]
prepared for a friendly with Brentford – the same night that New Order were playing at the Royal Festival Hall. For someone who’d never seen Joy Division play live, a plot emerged. “I’m not re-signing unless you take me off at half time,” he told the manager. Nevin got to see the gig, and the rest is the stuff of legend.

- Quote from a great article via Is This Music? An independent music magazine from Scotland.

As you will read in that above article Nevin eventually got in contact with the late great John Peel and they became great friends. After he retired from playing Pat ended up in the media and talking about football, but he still finds time for his other passion in which like John Peel he supports and encourages new music. Last year he was at the In The City event in Manchester. [Picture above taken by Katy B, in which he was in conversation with the ex-Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde. » More photos here.]

The good people at <a href="http://www.scaredtodance.co.uk/"target="_blank">Scared To Dance also knew of Pat Nevin’s love of indie music.

Scared To Dance is a monthly club night in London playing indie pop, post-punk, C86, jangle pop, Sarah, Postcard, new wave and protopunk. They are at the King's Cross Social Club, 2 Britannia Street, London. Admission is FREE. » MySpace page.

They invited him to be a guest DJ and on Friday 19th March he was there with a box of his favourite records. – <a href="http://www.scaredtodance.co.uk/data/wp-content/plugins/falbum/wp/album.php?album=72157623532272913"target="_blank">See the photos here.

Just before the event Pat <a href="http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/blogs/football-banter/Pat-Nevin-turns-indie-DJ-Find-out-what-former-Chelsea-and-Everton-winger-will-be-playing-including-Animal-Collective-Belle-And-Sebastian-The-Fall-Camera-Obscura-and-Pink-Industry-article350565.html"target="_blank">talked to Mirror Football about how he originally got into indie music and his friendship with John Peel. Plus there are a few YouTube clips of some selected tunes.

After discovering this Pat Nevin DJ event I contacted Scared To Dance <a href="http://twitter.com/ScaredToDance"target="_blank">via Twitter and asked if they could send me Pat Nevin’s playlist from that night. They had posted a link to a (partial) playlist on Spotify [here], but this service is not available in every country. They very kindly emailed me his playlist and I’ve been busy collecting together <a href="http://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/playlist.txt"target="_blank"Title="Click to view the playlist">every song listed.

If you have the time – Listen to them via You Tube:

If you can’t be arsed going through all that I’ve selected a couple of tunes to feature here.

The first one is from his playlist at the Scared To Dance night. On the above is the single, but in the Mirror Football article he mentions a different version:

Pink Industry – Don’t Let Go
Pat says: “Pink Industry were led by Jayne Casey, who was in the Liverpool band Big In Japan, then Pink Military. I’ll be playing the remix by Iain Broudie. I’m playing this mainly because nobody will be able to find it! It’s brilliant and really obscure!”

There’s another track which he talks about on that article which didn’t make the final playlist:

The Fall – Blindness
Pat says: “Specifically, it has to be the Peel Session version, which is miles ahead of the one on the Fall Heads Roll album. I first saw The Fall in 1982, when they had the Hex Enduction Hour album out, and they keep on producing. They’ve always had so much going on under the noise, which is a theme of the stuff I tend to like.”

“It’s not a word I use often, but Mark E Smith is kind of a genius and a bit of a poet as well. He’s been doing it so well for so many years, and so many people have tried to copy him.”

Don’t forget, don’t forget
He expected Aristotle Onasis
But instead he got Mr James Fennings from Prestwick, in Cumbria
The poster came at first
At first I thought it was just a poster
I was talking to James Seymour
Eyes wide open
The neck was slightly dislocated
But then I walked up the street
There was a repellent plastic
Said poster with a picture
Do you work?
I was on one leg
At the top of the street
There was a poster
A plastic front
From Moscow Road it came
From Deansgate it came
From Narnack Records it came
I was on one leg
I had to be in by 9.30
I said walking bass
Paper times 2
Paper times 2
Paper everywhere and not a drop of water to be seen
I said
I was by the ocean
I saw a poster
I am [?]
I am [?]
Everywhere I look I see a blind man
I see a blind man
Everywhere I look
I see a…
I can’t get my eyes checked
My blues eyes can’t get checked
I’m only one leg
I said to poster, “When’s the curfew over?
I said, “Blind man, have mercy on me.”
I said, “Blind man, have mercy on me.”
Blind man have mercy on me

This post is a nod to the Vinyl Villain who partly inspired me to start F&M.

The title for this entry is a slightly altered and corrected version of a famous line…

“They’ll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight”

… which was uttered by the commentator: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Leitch"target_blank">Sam Leitch after a significant victory in 1994.

Before I delve deeper into their past a quick note about their recent history:

I noticed about three weeks after it happened that Raith Rovers had won the Scottish 2nd Division title. I made a note to myself to post some things I had in relation to the club and recognition of this achievement when the new season started. Then I promptly forgot.
But it was fortuitous that I did because even though I had some material to post there was still one song I didn’t have, but now thanks to Steve at The Educated Left Foot for filling in this missing piece.

Back to the longer past then and a moment in time captured here:

For those of you not familiar with Scottish football in the mid-90′s… that was the Raith Rovers goalkeeper Scott Thomson making a save (after it was all square after extra time) and thus winning the League Cup for the Rovers.

- I found an interview in this Scotland on Sunday article where Thomson talks about that save:

“I remember in 1994 I kept looking at the clock and when Celtic scored the second goal I wondered if that was that but we fought back and got the equaliser to take it to extra time and penalties. I know some people say that cup finals pass by in a blur but I remember everything about that day – maybe that’s because it was the only medal I won – and I would love the United players to have the experience I had. In the penalty shoot-out, I didn’t get anywhere near the first three. Then I got a good hand to the fourth but the spin on it just took it inside the post. In games against the Old Firm you don’t get too many opportunities and I thought ‘please don’t let that be my only one’.

“Luckily I finally did save one. When I looked at the referee I thought he was going to make him take it again but as he picked up the ball I realised he had just been signalling it was all over.”

Thomson took off towards the halfway line only to see his team-mates all running away from him. “They were heading off to celebrate with our fans and the only person waiting for me was Stevie Crawford! But that was just the start of it.

As we lined up to collect our medals and get the cup I looked around, wanting to take it all in because you never know if you will get the chance to experience that again.

When we went back into the dressing room guys were just sitting there trying to take it all in. It was actually pretty quiet but then the door opened slightly and someone pushed in a box of champagne and the party got under way.”

You can re-live and relieve those moments via <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8WDr72N9TE"target="_blank">YouTube.

Back then winning the Scotia League Cup got you into the UEFA Cup and the next season saw them playing Bayern Munich and for another moment in time, Raith were on-nil up at half time against them in the Olympiastadion.
» Read more about their exploits and the Munich game at the most excellent and very recommended Scotzine.com website.

Extra note: I was actually living and working in Munich at the time but I can't remember this game. I did go and see Bayern play a few times, but I have no recall of this match. Must have been getting snitfaced in Gunther Murphy's or summat...

After their cup win, their UEFA exploits and selling a player Raith were able to generate enough money to redevelop their Stark’s Park ground. But they could not sustain the heights they had reached and a few years later were relegated from the Premier Division. Things got worse with another relegation in 2001/02 and then the danger of going out of existence all together. But there was a successful rescue and now the club is owned and run locally. A rare thing to see with football clubs these days.
One of the fans who assisted and now a shareholders is non other than the current Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Other well known supporters include the author Ian Rankin, the drummer from the Wedding Present and the bassist from Coldplay.

So to the music then…

Nothing from these notable musical fans (come on chaps, pull your finger out) but a few selections from a local band who have sung about Raith. I don’t know if it was done for their League Cup glory or if it was just done just because they are fans. Either way let me introduce you to Dennis and David, better known as Crooked Jack

As the time of writing Raith Rovers are currently sitting pretty in 2nd place in Scotia Division 1.
The future is looking bright.

Or the merest <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8240137.stm"target="_blank">glimmer of a hope, depending on how you look at it.

Sorry…? What…? That isn’t the men’s team, it’s the women… I thought Craig Gordon was looking a bit curvy.

Let me fix that for you:

Even if they do win tomorrow (Wednesday) Scotland’s chances of being there next June depend on many other factors. This article from the Beeb about that:

Scotland could yet confirm their place in the play-offs for the World Cup finals on Wednesday should they beat the Netherlands.

If results elsewhere go their way, George Burley’s side might avoid a nervous, month-long wait for the other eight European qualification groups to be decided.

Of course, for the Scots to clinch a coveted play-off spot, it’s highly likely they will first need to overcome the odds and beat the Dutch at Hampden.

The worst-placed of the nine group runners-up will miss out on the South Africa 2010 shoot-out in November and Scotland and their rivals for the runners-up spot in Group Nine are in danger of doing just that.

However, Group Three – and to a lesser extent Group Five – provide the Scots with most hope.

» Read the full article for the summary

But before this they have to get a result against Holland, who are not going to exactly lie down for them even if they are all ready qualified. The Netherlands would like to get a 100% record.

The Scotia boys are at home and at Hampden Park and with that crowd behind them. So we’ll see. After all it is football.

- For the music it is only appropriate for this crucial game to pull out one of their better known, probably their most famous song actually.

Originally done back in 1982 and recently revived last year for Children in Need – here is a live version by the celtic bard, the Scotland Springsteen, the Scotia Billy Joel… I’ll stop now… which was recorded a few years ago at, I think at the Edinburgh Festival (lost the note I wrote to myself about it) with a bit of audience participation:

I don’t know who the Glasgow born comedian supports. I thought it was Rangers but I can’t find any evidence to back that up. After a search I found this this question asking the same and again, the same uncertainty about were his loyalties lie.

- A reminder of when he was was a Scotia boy with this one from his (hard to find now) album – Mental…Bing Hitler Is Dead :

Yabba dabba do...

When one of the national teams qualify for a major championship final the the first thing to do next is to of course record some music to <strike>cash in</strike> celebrate this achievement.

Scotland took this opportunity and they added that other essential ingredient into this mix by calling up the biggest (locally grown) musical act who were the flavour of the day and for the 1974 World Cup* that was…

<img style="padding:10px;" src="http://i42.tinypic.com/en191.jpg" border="0" Bay City - Scotland" />

*Additional note: An actual footballing observation here – Scotland were the only home nation who qualified for ’74. They didn’t lose any of their matches in the first round, they won 1 and drew the other two. Finished on the same amount of points as the team above them – Brazil – and only didn’t get through to the latter stages because of goal difference.

Actually the truth is it wasn’t Les, Alan, Derek and err…Simon and…umm…Tarquin…(?) who got involved, but their creators – the writers and producers Bill Martin & Phil Coulter.

I don’t know who, why and how it all came about, but an album was put out which by the looks of it was slapdashidly (yes I’ve just invented a new word there) put together as a last minute token effort.

Some of the tracks are previous hits (by some other Scotia acts) added on as filler by the looks.
And also by the looks the tracks that involved the ’74 Scotland team were songs previously rejected by the Bay City Rollers – or in this case – a re-recording of one of their hits (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqj6OXQnnaE"target="_blank">Shang-a-Lang in this case) :

[See post to listen to audio]
» The 1974 Scotland Squad – Easy, Easy

Sample lyrics:

“Ring a ding a ding, there goes Willy on the wing”
“Ring a ding a dong now we know we can’t go wrong”

… or maybe two, because I hear a bit of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNAMV02Ux-0"target="_blank">Sha La La La in there too…

- -
Also included on the album was the Scotia squad singing a more traditional sounding singalong:

[See post to listen to audio]
» 1974 Scotland World Cup Squad – Scotland, Scotland
*Warning* the audio is a bit loud on this one.

- If you collect that sort of thing then there’s a copy of the original LP up for sale on ebay right now.
If you do buy it can you rip one particular track to mp3 because it looks very interesting…

It’s by the (now reformed) JSD Band and the track is: “Ormond’s Favourite / World Cup Reel”.
I’m assuming that they are singing about Willie…

I’ve been dismissive of the band here, but as well as their twee teeny pop hits the Bay City Rollers did do a couple of decent tunes. Randomly selected here because they could have a link to fitba.
