October 25th: We are #KeepingItPeel

Today is October 25th.

Today is a solemn day, but not for long. Because we don’t mope here. We celebrate.

Celebrate and commemorate a life less ordinary and one that touched hundreds… thousands… dare I say it – millions of people.

But not because of what he did, well yes partly… more because of the music he played.

I’m not going to start listing all the bands/artists he played. Just pick a letter and see for yourself.

Peelie impacted and influenced my life more than I could say. This is why I started the #KeepingItPeel project. Initially the idea was that we – the people who listened – that we show our appreciation. Then the podcasts came along because once again the BBC, as the did with the John Peel Day and with a podcast – they abandoned them.

This is why it’s vitally important that all of us continue with #keepingitpeel today and every day. This year and every year.
Not just with the Peel Sessions, but by going out and finding new music. Listening to the new upcoming bands.

Right I’ve prattled on enough. It’s time that I added my contribution to #keepingitpeel today:

As you would expect with a football and music website – plus with John Peel himself being a big football fan, guess what this special edition podcast is about… Yes that’s right. Flower arranging.

My source for this podcast, as it is with all the #KeepingItPeel podcasts is the very excellent John Peel Wiki.

As everyone knows John was a huge Liverpool fan, going as far not only getting married in Liverpool colours, but by giving his children middle names associated with the club.

The podcast today has items featured on the football section of the John Peel Wiki, as well as material taken from or sent by ross ofcourse my collaborator on the #KeepingItPeel pods.
Suffice to say if you are a Liverpool fan you will enjoy this. Even if you are not but still a football fan you’ll still like.

The first 13 minutes of his show from 30th May 1984:

This was the night when Liverpool (after a penalty shoot out with Roma), won the European Cup. Watching along in the studio with Peel at the time was David “Kid” Jensen and Kid asks John about the game and how he feels about it.

Once again John is watching another crucial match which went the same way at the 1984 game, this time though it was England and unlike Liverpool’s fortunes from the penalty spot, we all know what happens with England.
Peel has to start his show whilst the game is into extra time. He puts on his favourite song by The Fall at which point Frank Lampard scores, so he then plays the same track again. – Listen to the audio for explanation. Tracks played:

The gentleman above is Mehmet Scholl, the ex-Bayern Munich and German international player.

Scholl is similar to his Scottish counterpart in that he likes to listen to some half decent tunes. I say half decent because unlike Nevin his selections are not the most eclectic or avant-guarde, but it is still stuff that you would hear on 6 Music.

I’m not going to do a full bio on Scholl’s footballing career, but I will do a quick recap:
Mehmet Scholl is one of the most successful German football players of all time, during his career the attacking midfielder won eight German Championships with Bayern Munich, as well as the UEFA (Europa) Cup and the Champions League trophy. He was also part of the German national team which won Euro ’96.

It’s obviously the musical angle we are looking at and with a couple of mixtapes (compilation albums) in which Scholl was responsible for selecting the tracks.

From Wikipedia:

“In May 2002 and October 2003, he released two successful mixtapes, featuring his favourite bands. The compilation’s title “Mehmet Scholl kompiliert – Vor dem Spiel ist nach dem Spiel” is a reference to Sepp Herberger’s famous expression “nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel” (“after the game is before the game”). In an interview, Scholl said he chose this title because he listens to this music before the game, after the game, in the car on the way to the stadium, and in the car when leaving the stadium.

The first volume includes songs by The Beta Band, Sportfreunde Stiller, Jimmy Eat World, and The Notwist among others. The second volume includes songs by Oasis, Wir sind Helden, and The Flaming Lips. Once a month, he co-presents the feature Mehmets Schollplatten in the program Nachtmix of the Bayern 2 radio station, which is the culturally oriented channel of the federal public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk.”

In 2007 there was a documentary made about the man. It’s called Frei:Gespielt – Mehmet Scholl: Über das Spiel hinaus (Free: Played – Mehmet Scholl: Beyond the game) and is a retrospective on his career.

There’s an accompanying soundtrack which by the looks Scholl also chose the tracks for this album. On there you can find Decemberists, Mazzy Star, Teenage Fanclub… It is still available at Amazon UK & Amazon USA.

…but that’s not all…

There’s one more band not included above but is a favourite of Mehmet’s. They played live at his farewell match (Bayern v Barcelona) plus he managed to convince them to wear the traditional leiderhosen as they performed at Scholl’s farewell dinner afterwards:

The band are called The Hidden Cameras [int w/lead singer] and I highly recommend you search out any or all of their releases. I didn’t know this band or anything about them until I saw the above clip, after this I had to go and find out more. They are just fantastic.
Nick from Fisted Away pointed me towards three videos of theirs: In The NA, Underage and The Little Bit.

Over the years there have been many wannabe pop stars but today I’m picking one particular story to highlight. This is the tale of Joseph K. Keegan, who you may have heard of, who was a frustrated singer that barely bothered the musical charts.

But Joseph’s story begins not in music, it starts with football…

In the latter part of the 60′s the Doncaster born Keegan was spotted playing for his local amateur team Pegler FC and was soon signed by the 4th Division outfit Firewall FC. After playing a few seasons for the bottom dwelling club eventually a scout from higher up the divisions saw his potential and in 1971 moved to the North West to play for that team who put their games on at the south end of Stanley Park… name escapes me right now…

His impact was instant scoring 12 minutes into his debut. After that midfield player was eventually stuck up the front where he banged in a few more.

It was during this time that he began to realise his first love, that of music and now had the opportunity to do something about it…

Joseph, now going by his middle (stage) name of Kevin was signed by MAM Records
and in 1972 released his first single It Ain’t Easy which was noticed by precisely nobody.

Keegan took this knockback personally (he might have, you don't know) and never went near another recording studio for another 7 years…

By now Kevin had moved to German in an attempt to further his pop career and this proto-David Hasselhoff tried again with a single co-written and produced by two blokes who eventually went on to join Smokie.

Success ! Head Over Heels hit the charts, reaching the giddy heights of number 31. He even got on the telly with an appearance on the Little and Large show.

Next in 1980 came another single, but pining for home after his exile over in Hamburg for the last three years his ode to the mother country “England” was sensibly (criminally?) ignored.

Apart from one more time as part as a group, he never tried to sing again and fell back onto his other career…

Announcing…

The Summer of Pod

Was going to call it the Hand of Pod but somebody’s already using that.

Like many of you I want to take it easy for the next month or two.

It’s sunny… and you are thinking about the trouble that xx team are having with their left back position right now.

OK maybe you are but I’m not.

There are still some matches to be found if you are having withdrawal symptoms. Football never sleeps.

- At this very moment there is the Gold Cup, competed by Central/North American teams.
It has been very entertaining so far with Mexico scoring 10 goals without reply in their first two matches. Oh and they’ve also had five players suspended after failing a drug test.

- Starting on June 11th it’s the European Under 21 Championship, being staged in Denmark this year. An opportunity to see what Man U & Liverpool have splashed so much cash on this week.

- Lastly there’s the South American nations competing in the Copa América from 1st to 24th July in Argentina.

So there’s some watching if you want – or if you are going to the beach I have some listening… finally he gets to the point… with the new series of the Summer of Pod.

I will, at least attempt, to post a new FootieAndMusic podcast each week.
These pods will be around 30 minutes long and will take various themes.
If you have an idea/suggestion for a future theme drop me a line. I’m all ears.

This is not rock n’ roll football, not just a bunch of pop/rock/etc songs usually associated with the game. But there will be the occasional non-footie track thrown in if I can find a tenuous link. The aim is to find the “best” football songs I have in my vast collection and create a podcast. The majority of decent songs do come from bands who sing about they country/team or player, but sometimes I will offend your ears with actual footballers attempting to sing. You have been warned.

» To… dare I use a cliché…… kick off this series (ah I feel dirty now) the theme of this podcast is PUNK ?

As you can see with the question mark there because what is punk ? (By the was does anyone remember Football Punk magazine ? Didn’t last long that one.) Are the songs on this pod really punk ? There’s another England match coming up on Saturday and whilst this is an essential match, it isn’t quite a crucial one…

All depends on the results of course, but as you know things are more interesting when there’s a will/won’t they qualifying situation going on rather than a casual canter into the finals as we saw with the last World Cup.

Maybe if it was a bit closer and more nail biting people might take notice, because at the moment when you talk about the national team… no-one cares.

Club football has taken over. It is the Champions League now. Tell me I’m wrong.

So on Saturday then… the timing of these things… but if this match was scheduled inside the regular season instead of after it, there’d still be complaints… These national/international matches have become an inconvenience now.

They’ll try to peak your interest for this game and indeed we should take notice. I’m sure that Wembley will be sold out, but I bet the television viewing figures will be down.

Not sure were I’ll be or if I’ll be able myself. But I know I’ll be looking for the latest score and the result.

Why is this then ? Is it because of the scheduling ? Or is it the opposition ? Maybe it’s because of the players….? *raises eyebrow*

The good thing is that he’s not playing because he made sure he kicked somebody in the last match and got a card, ensuring that he’s got himself an uninterrupted holiday. Plus there’s him with his long term injury.
But that one is still going to be there…

A similar thing happened as it did with the previous podcast, so once again this edition comes in two flavours.

What happened was that I had some old England-related tunes and I tried to do some sort of England timeline, but with the music. I started with 1966 and added songs throughout the years, finishing at 2010. But this concept was too big, too much to do. Plus with the music too. The styles of the songs from way back then to now is obviously very different. So I’ve split the entire thing up and now bring you some England music sub-genres. The Football And Music Podcast

To quote the album title: Everybody else is doing it, so why can’t we…?

The idea for this came from my other gig over at #KeepingItPeel, which was set up to commemorate John Peel with a #keepingitpeel day on October 25th, but I’ve filled in the time between then with a series of podcasts.

An idea I have for a future special edition of the #KIP podcasts, since he was a huge Liverpool fan, is for one where Peelie gives a mention to football on his show and/or any football-related tune that he might have played.
I then thought about this site and…

Announcing the first in a new (occasional) series of FootieAndMusic podcasts.

With this inaugural pod the theme I chose was Starting XI and the original idea was to compile a group of songs done about players in each position. I soon discovered though that there are plenty of tunes done about strikers, obviously, but not all that many about left backs or holding midfielders.

I then made a further discovery with the songs I selected for this pod in that they fell into two genre’s. I’m using a broad description here, but these tracks sounded either “punk” or “dance” music.

At first I mixed both types together, but they gel. Which is probably no surprise. So for this 1st edition of the F&M pods there are two versions. You choose which you’d like to listen to and if you want to put them together.

- PLEASE NOTE: I will not do a pod for a specific club because 1) There are CD’s and downloads available elsewhere. 2) Most of these club songs are crap anyway and 3) With some teams there’s an imbalance with their music. For some sides, Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal for example, there are loads of songs, but for others, e.g. Blackpool or Bolton, there’s hardly any.

These days you don’t have the time to listen to the pundits on the radio, but you don’t need to tune in anymore to get your kicks on 606 (*groans*), thanks to the interweb you can get your occasional, weekly or if you are really addicted, daily fix with some football podcasts.

A guide to what is available online:

The best of the best is the Guardian Football Weekly with James Richardson.
He of the old Football Italia on Channel 4 and now on Sentanta Sport, complete with his puns can be heard every Monday – and now every Thursday too.*
*An exception for this week – the Football Weekly Extra will be posted on Wednesday to cover the Champions League.

World Soccer Daily is a radio show that can be heard on Sirus Satellite radio. Broadcast every day between 10-12 Pacific Time (8 hours behind the UK). Since they are in the same place these two big gobbed presenters talk about Derek and the LA Galaxy, plus the MLS, the Premier League and everything else so..ccer.
