I’m being a lazy arse on this one and reposting content already posted elsewhere, but I’m sure you chaps don’t mind…

- I spotted this over on The Vinyl Villain, but as the name of this site implies – I want to start with the discovery of a second related item first:

Football

This entry is about Dumbarton FC – “the best supported team in the Third Division”, so I read…

Back in 1978 they recorded a song for the club. Not because they were going for promotion or because of a cup final appearance or anything, but because of the World Cup that year (no they didn’t play in it because of some bizarre reason) – and because Midge Ure was involved too..

I’ll let The Helpless Dancer, the original provider of the song, explain:

“Many won’t realise that Dumbarton FC have also been recording artists…..in 1978 caught up in World Cup fever the DFC Squad of ‘78 were roped into a recording session with Midge Ure to record a “World Cup” song for EMI America entitled “Hey Argentina” * safe to say like Scotland it flopped!

At the same session they recorded the same song with alternative lyrics called “The Sons We’re The Ones” …”

* I’d obviously love to hear that track, but for now here are the Sons of the Rock:

Notice the badge there. Elephant & Castle. Nothing to do with the London Borough. Wikipedia sez:

“The clubs’ badge features an elephant with a castle on its back, this represents Dumbarton Rock with Dumbarton Castle upon it, Dumbarton Rock, a volcanic plug is said to resemble an elephant & the teams nickname ‘The Sons’ is derived from the phrase ‘Sons of The Rock’ a term used for those born in the town of Dumbarton.”

So what is it about this bit of rock then? Why do they have such an obsession over it ?

Well <a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1c/Strathclyde_Homes_Stadium.jpg"target="_blank">have you seen it ?

Pictured there in that link (if you haven’t clicked it) is one hunking huge bit of rock in which Dumbarton’s new ground is built under the shadow of. Half of the year that place must get no sun.

Music

Before this Dumbarton used to play at the most excellently named Boghead Park. Sadly the ground is no more, it was sold for housing development.

But in the 90′s when they were still there, a band hailing from a few miles down the road composed a song with some great lyrics which mentioned the ground.

These were originally posted on the The Vinyl Villain a while back. Mirrored here because they are only available over there for a limited time.

It’s one of those days you get in the West of Scotland where it’s sunny and it’s snowing and it’s raining at the same time. Most of the crowd are waiting for the Celtic and Rangers scores on the tannoy. This little kid behind me, I suppose purely out of frustration, throws his pie at an ambulance man’s head. It hits the ambulance man’s head and sends his hat flying into a puddle. I’m thinking about the times I used to come here when I was about 5, with my big brother. He used to have a duffel bag, with a flask of coffee and a little note-book and he’d take notes at the match. I was pretty embarrassed to be at a match with such a dick. I suppose he’s changed a little bit -a lot- since then. There was one time I went with my big brother and my big cousin, I was standing watching the crowd, as I sometimes do these days (as it can be much more interesting than the match). That was the days when I used to think that there was one goal post. I turned round and my brother and my cousin had disappeared. I was standing on my own. I was finding it all pretty boring so I decided to walk home, all 7 miles. I stopped off in a joke shop on the way home with my pocket-money and bought a gorilla mask.
