Which it did and which we all knew that it would.

The way that he lives his life and with all the drama that always surrounds it, the latest episode in his very public soap opera is with the exit from the Argentina national team job.

He lives with his heart on his sleeve and none of us would want it any other way.

The figure that we once loved to hate we now have a soft spot for, the media darling that the media wish they could cover every single day.

Whatever happened, even if there wasn’t the back-biting you couldn’t see him hanging around anyway.

Diego gets bored easily. He goes into these “relationships” like it’s a torrid affair and then when he’s found out… Well you couldn’t imagine it any other way. It wouldn’t be Maradona if there weren’t accusations, bitter recriminations and yes… a tear in the eye.

I was almost tempted to name this post Don’t cry for me Argentina but in fact the Argentinian public didn’t. They reviled him as a player, but not as the coach. Better for everybody now that the AFA (Argentinian Football Association) has extracted this distraction.

So then to future and what next for El Diego ? Has to be club management of course. But which chairman is that crazy/suicidal enough to even risk a dramatic and roller coaster ride through a single season before the inevitable emotional press conference ?

Form a line over there please…

Some music to accompany these musings… and with some foresight, but they like us knew it would be inevitable that he would be in the news either very soon or very often, the Corrigan Brothers – with Shay Healy added this to YouTube:

Oh oh oh Diego- Diego Maradona

From Boca Juniors
To Napoli
It was Diego
They came to see.
Soon he became,
A superstar
Until he went
A bit too far

That old cocaine
It wrecked his head
So he quit the blow
And he ate instead
He got so fat
We all thought that he
Was heading for
Eternity

oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a goner
oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona
oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a goner
oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona

The pint sized wizard
Argen ten ian
Has been to hell
But he’s back again
He got in shape
Cleaned up his act
You should see the babes
That this man attracts

oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a gonner
oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona
oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a gonner

oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona

He’s a comeback King
Like the great Ali
Diego says
Don’t mess with me
I beat the booze
And I beat the coke
They sing my name
Like I’m the Pope

oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a goner

oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona

oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a goner
oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona

BUT MOST OF ALL
WE WONT FORGET
ONE SPECIAL GOAL
FLYING TO THE NET
HE SAYS FROM HEAVEN
HE GOT THE NØD
AND HE BANGED IT IN
WITH THE HAND OF GOD

oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a goner
oh oh oh Diego
Diego maradona
oh oh oh Diego
they said you were a goner
oh oh oh Diego

Diego maradona

I would keep composing a few more tunes about him chaps. You know that there’ll be more headlines.

Not that he needs any more promotion, he’s good at doing that himself. But some kudos to the author of <a href="http://www.europeanfootballweekends.co.uk/"target="_blank">European Football Weekends (EFW) for his <a href="http://twitter.com/DannyLast"target="_blank">Twitter posts – which are plenty – and particularly for a couple that tickled me because of their clever play on words AND song titles.

So to expand on his original tweets may I present to you…

Mertesacker Emptiness

http://twitter.com/DannyLast/status/17977733207

Arsenal were interested in him before the World Cup:

Werder Bremen’s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_Mertesacker"target="_blank">Per Mertesacker opened the door to a summer move to Arsenal with the German international centre-half calling a potential move to the Emirates ‘attractive’.

The 25-year-old, a first choice for his country, was asked about his future at the Weserstadion by German daily Bild.

‘There are certainly attractive clubs abroad. In particular, clubs that have been playing for years in the Champions League,’ he said.

After completing his fourth season at Werder, the 6ft 5in stopper could be exactly the type of performer required by Arsene Wenger to solve his central-defensive conundrum.

While Thomas Vermaelen – a £10million recruit from Ajax last summer – shone in his first season at Arsenal, the futures of veterans William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre are unclear.

With 60 caps already under his belt, Mertesacker’s leadership qualities and consistency could be exactly the attributes required at Arsenal as Wenger looks to mount a title challenge.

Pjanic on the streets of Madrid

Via the Guardian:

A second-half goal by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miralem_Pjani%C4%87"target="_blank">Miralem Pjanic had brought them to this. Cristiano Ronaldo’s early opener had promised to clear an easy passage into the quarter-final. Instead, Madrid were beaten yet again. When Pjanic hit the ball past Iker Casillas in the 75th minute, the score was levelled at 1-1, leaving the French side 2-1 up on aggregate and Madrid needing two goals in quarter of an hour. They didn’t get one…

… And then it happened. Lisandro, with his back to goal, hit a first-time pass into Pjanic’s path and when the ball sat up he hit it on the bounce. Madrid could scarcely believe it.

As you many have guessed I’m taking a bit of a break. So in the meantime whilst it’s quiet and for something to do – I am throwing down the challenge glove…

This challenge was something started via Twitter when Sweeping The Nation tweeted with <a href="http://twitter.com/sweepingnation/status/13387041296"target="_blank">this comment a few months back.

The tweet, for those of you who can’t be arsed clicking on that link is for a video from Edward (Ed) Ball and his song: “Mill Hill Self Hate Club”, which I think tickled the lower to mid end of the charts in 1996.
What was significant about the video for his song was that there were a few well known faces including a Premier League footballer.

So from the suggestion originally by Sweeping The Nation, this has now become:

Find a music video where a football player makes an appearance.

Now there are rules to this – the video has to be of a player who just pops up somewhere. He doesn’t sing, but instead tries his acting chops in these three minute mini-tales…plays…? fables ? …I can’t think of the right word at the moment.

Some examples of what I’ve found below. Can you add to these ? Leave a comment.

I’ll post these in the order of the year the song was released and start with Junior Giscombe.

You remember Junior ? He had that fantastic song <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwTTGnDcwoA"target="_blank">Mama Used To Say which was a huge hit in 1981. A few years later he released a single Do You Really (Want My Love) which was als on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack.

The setting for the accompanying video was an indoor 5-a-side match at the local gym. Not very imaginative and reverting to type just because of the footballer they managed to get involved I think, or maybe it was because Junior was a friend or fan of this particular striker.. Who knows.

The plot for the video is that Junior is the subs bench and was pleading with his manager to get a game because there’s this girl on another bench who he wants to impress. By half time his team are 5-nil down and the boss gives these players a rollocking. A team which includes one Garth Crooks, late of Spurs at the time, now still a cub reporter at the Beeb… As you can see from the screencap above old Garth doesn’t look too impressed at this bloke telling him what to do.

The 2nd half kicks off and Junior’s team are still getting mullered and eventually he’s given a chance.
Our hero steps onto the pitch… sorry gym floor and… well have a look for yourself:

- Link to video

Additional notes: Loses a few points because it uses a football player in a football setting. Would have liked to have seen Crooks dresses as a clown in a circus or something. There could be some other Spurs players in the video too , I’m not familiar with their team from that era. If you spot one add a comment.

Next we have the aforementioned Edward Ball, who was signed to Creation Records at the time and a big mate of the founder of the label Alan McGee, who you can see on the video. As well as him Ed got another mate of his to play guitar in the band. I don’t know if he actually played on the single or just appear in the video… anyway step forward Nick Heyward, late of Haircut 100 and one of the many lead singers who think they can break out on their own but end up in obscurity.

Our featured footballer this time is the Guardian reading Graeme Le Saux, who at the time was playing for the Jack Walker financed Blackburn Rovers, but a few months later moved to Chelsea.

The plot for this one is really simple – Ed is sitting in a caff (and occasionally playing with the band) waiting for his date to show. Whilst he’s there – for a good few hours – some people (McGee and then Le Saux) come and sit at the tables. Eventually his date turns up and it’s…

- Link to video

Additional notes: Another one that loses a couple of points because of the set up of a football pitch on the table as a way to telegraph that this was a well known footballer we were looking at. We know who he is.

Now we have some bizarreness… It comes in the form of Dr. Alban (not a real doctor obviously) who you may remember from the early 90′s dance hit <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VE6sKlhuHQ"target="_blank">“It’s My Life” which was also used in those bloody (literally !) Tampax adverts. The bizarre doesn’t come from that but from another tune he did in 1999.

For this song he went the Ed Ball route and roped in some of his (Swedish) sporting pals – and what friends he keeps. In the video you will see Bjorn Borg and a footie player featured previously on F&M – Tomas Brolin.

In the clip below the good (non) Dr. Alban has hired a stretched limo and along with Borg and Brolin, they are all dressed to the nines in some white dinner jackets. Also in the video there’s some bikini clad birds in a swimming pool and err… You’d better just watch:

- Link to video

Additional notes: Again we know who he is so there’s no need for any clips showing his greatest moments (although he might have requested that himself.) Or the footage of the chunky Brolin destroying a wall with a… football. Again a bit too on the nose.

For this one it is back to a World Cup year (2002) and a silly decision by Keith Allen to once again flog this dead horse with a self-released tune. It was also a notable event with his daughter Lily (aged 15 at the time )making her first guest vocals and video appearance. The song, with Blur’s Dave Rowntree on drums, has a video shot in and around Soho in London. And to compete with Dr. Alban above it seems, there’s a bit of bizarreness in the form of Wayne Sleep wearing that protective gear that boxers use when in training. He can be seen pirouetting around the crowds in Carnaby Street.

The football representation in this case (because in the song there’s barely any mentions) comes in the form of that Sky Sports legendary summariser Chris “Kammy” Kamara, who is also name checked in the song.

- Link to video

Additional notes: Points lost because of the name check and because Kammy is on camera for only a few seconds.

Here now we have a 2004 video from a Spanish group who score some major points because of the player they got to appear in the video and what they got him to do.

The band is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Canto_del_Loco"target="_blank">El Canto del Loco (The Song of the Madman).
In the video below it takes a nod to the Junior Giscombe clip. In this case it’s the lead singer of the band who’s at a bus station when who should walk in but Fernando Torres. He is accompanying a female (assumed to be his girlfriend) and whilst they are sitting waiting for the bus the lead singer catches the girls eye and the girl also spots him. Then they both have an out of body experience… No I’m not kidding here. Eventually the bus is ready to leave and the singer boards. We then see Torres and the girl approach the bus, Fernando goes in to kiss his video partner BUT SHE BLANKS HIM ! She must have been a clairvoyant and saw this trip that Torres took in the future.

- Link to video

Additional notes: As I said extra points for snagging Torres for the video, for not mentioning or even giving a hint of football. But especially for the fact that the lead singer steals Fernando’s girl.

Lastly for now and I can’t believe that I’m posting a Westlife video on here…

The premise for their pop music video – “Bop Bop Baby”… it hurts as I type that…. is that the boys are Musketeers are locked in a dungeon. There’s a girl (as always) which wanted to marry one of the boyband members – it’s not clear which, maybe all of them. But her Father is forcing her to marry the vilest man in the kingdom for cold, hard cash. That man is Duke Vincent – known more commonly to you and me as Vinnie Jones, who is well known to croon a few tunes himself.

As mentioned the lads are locked in an underground castle dungeon and singing some (slightly confusing) lyrics which really do not fit in with their situation:

“When I call you at home and he answers the phone
Or I get your machine and I don’t hear me”

Then suddenly help from outside and some unknown accomplice blows a big fecking hole in the wall, they escape, storm the wedding and proceed to beat the living crap out of Jones.
So the video does have some high points.

- Link to video

Additional notes: Loses a couple of points because they got a footballer who likes to sing, but the man himself helps gain them back by being in a Westlife video and for allowing a boyband to beat him up.

Those are the ones that I’ve found, but there’s got to be more out there. Do you know of any ?
If you spot any candidates please add a comment below:

We know how things are on our side, but how do the German fans and the country as a whole see it ?
I decided to ask a friend of F&M – Teena a “German Geordie” who runs <a href="http://www.yimum.blogspot.com/"target="_blank">Y I, Mum? for her thoughts and posed a couple of questions: What (in your opinion) is the Germany team like at the moment ? What do the German people think of the team and their chances ?

Teena went above and beyond what I was expecting so I’m copy & pasting her entire response:

“Our team ? Hmm… I like Jogi’s multi-cultural kids. Technically good (though the passing at times leaves me speechless… or voiceless), enterprising and entertaining, and surprisingly creative. Respect for the opponents but no fear. The last two games have shown a number of weaknesses, most worryingly individual errors and lack of communication/understanding in defence. Neuer hasn’t really done anything wrong in goal yet, largely due to the fact that he hasn’t had that much to do in the first place, but I’d rather not leave it till penalties. Mad Jens he ain’t.

Team spirit though is excellent and collectively, I think, we are a bit pacier and trickier than England, but also less experienced, bit brittle at the back, and at times prone to lose our cool. And of course we’re keeping all fingers crossed that MÖÖÖ (that’s MezütÖÖÖzil :) & <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8759105.stm"target="_blank">Schweini get fit for Sunday. Without them…I’d start biting my nails now. But with them fit, I’m quietly confident.

Most of my fellow Germans are largely of the same opinion. While some still rate Gomez (dunno why or as what :D) and others shout for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefan_Kie%C3%9Fling"target="_blank">Kießling to get a chance up front (me too), all agree that the team is a lot better than we had initially thought/feared and reaching the quarter finals would be a massive achievement for such a young bunch. That said, I know more Germans who will loudly and proudly support England on Sunday (don’t ask..) and they reckon we (Germany) get soundly beaten by England (largely believing the “Rooney propaganda machine”. Despite having watched all 3 England games. Probably not all Germany games though.

All are in high spirits in Schlaaaaaaaaaaaaand, as it is now known, with wild anticipation too. Most football friends (of either nationality) hope for their country to win but also for a good and fair game. If we play crap and go out (even against England.. we’re quite over that old rivalry by now), most of us won’t have a huge problem (after 10 beers and maybe a few tears) then start preparing for 2012.”

The other question I put to her was obviously about music and like everybody over in England, there are many, many acts who have jumped on the Germany/World Cup song bandwagon.

“ The music…?

Obviously “Schland o Schland” is THE summer hit. I’ve seen strangers at tram stops jamming to it.
Also “Gimme Hope Joachim” is another one, but more amongst older generations as the kids can’t remember the original.

Much like myself, many people dig out “classic” football songs such as “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9owJbIUlFNc"target="_blank">54, 74, 90, 2010” by Sportfreunde Stiller, plus there’s Helden 2010 (Revolverheld’s re-written 2008 hit) highly shoutable, thousands of fans in a public viewing area singing it give you goosebumps.

Another ‘official’ one is Stefan Hämer’s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DKLrary2SZ0w"target="_blank">“Wir glauben an euch” (we believe in you)… also there’s a Mercedes-sponsored campaign <a href="http://www.der-vierte-stern-fuer-deutschland.de/?csref=newsletter_02_dvsfd_song&#/song"target="_blank">“Der vierte Stern für Deutschland”. A bit slow for my taste, I need more cheery uppy bounceable tunes like Kika Live Ben – <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkiMNVYIcAA"target="_blank">“Let’s go WM 2010″ and also – “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Do83IbS8w"target="_blank">Schaut nach oben (Look up)“. The vid’s a bit amateurish but the song and lyrics are not too shabby, needs a wee make-over but I like…”

I’ll end it there because Teena mentions loads more which I want to save for another time.
IF they get through to the next round of course…

A postscript though on the “Gimme Hope Joachim” tune – Teena has informed me that there’s an updated and up-to-date video just made and published. So I’ll close this post with the a capella song by Basta which now includes <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uwe_Seeler"target="_blank">Uwe Seeler, the current squad minus Michael Ballack. France on strike, Rob Green, Beckham in a suit instead of England strip, Spanish referees… ah just watch it below. Then go over to <a href="http://yimum.blogspot.com/2010/06/big-day-build-up-pt-2-gizzus-song.html"target="_blank">Y I, Mum? for more details and eventually some translated lyrics.

That’s a thought – Where are the cheerleaders for the USMNT ? They were there back in <a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/Search/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&assetType=image&family=Editorial&p=usa%201994%20world%20cup%20cheerleaders"target="_blank">1994… Admittedly they were Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, but they were there. I think it’s probably more because it’s a bit nippy down there is South Africa. However if the Americans win the rights to hold a future World Cup I’m sure they’ll be back.

I’m distracting myself as well as you here. Let’s talk about some <strike>football</strike> soccer !

It is a pity that the USA didn’t finish runners up in the group. I’m not saying this because of an England bias or because of the more favourable route that they’ll have if they continue in the competition.

It is because:

1) Their match would have been on a Sunday afternoon. Weekend (sporting) prime time for the U.S TV networks – and especially for people on the West Coast who wouldn’t have to get up really early.

2) It would have given me a perfect excuse to post a clip from The Simpsons where Monty Burns was taunting the Germans. Ah what the hell. Here it is anyway.

3) If they won that match then the Quarter Final is on Sa July 3rd – a big holiday weekend in America.
Again imagine the TV rating for that. It would have been HUUUUGE !

But sadly nobody from ESPN/ABC spotted this potential massive money making opportunity and then had a quiet word in Bob Bradley’s ear before the Algeria game.

So then to repost a couple of videos from songs about the USA!USA!USA! team that I’ve mentioned previously. Starting with one from the balls to the wall posting…

- First up is a tune for the US Men’s team which after their victory was heard playing in the <strike>changing</strike> locker room. It’s the Weezer – Represent song:

- Link to video

This next one was originally featured in the USA posting. It is a great tongue-in-cheek ditty which I still don’t know anything about, but it’s become one of my favourite tunes from the World Cup so far.
I’ve named it: Loumae Earl – Blah Blah Blah, Football…

- <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGUpdxTDBBc"target="_blank">Link to video

There’s a good chance of them progressing and there’s barely any more (decent) songs related to the U.S Team out there. That is very poor. Don’t know what I’m going to post next if they do go though !

One of the highest searches to the site was:
"vuvuzela sound clip"
but I have bad news for all of you looking for any such thing here, I’m not going to help you populate this annoyance.
I don’t know why people want this… is it for a mobile phone ringtone or something ? Either way as I said I’m not going to assist, look elsewhere for that.

Another search is for a question that I was actually thinking about…
"songs using a vuvuzela"

The answer to that is yes, there are a few tunes out there utilizing the instrument that we love to hate.

- This one via You Tube from a user called Uncle Vuvuzela, who mixed in some news clips:

- The next one was released back in November 2009, so we’ve had a long time to be aware and to prepare ourselves for this honking nightmare…

This was done by DJ Sbu who actually <a href="http://djsbuonline.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=224&Itemid=48"target="_blank">is a DJ. His vuvuzela song was done to cheer on the Bafana Bafana – who kick off in their 2nd match in a couple of hours. So best of luck to them, I do hope they make it to the next round.

This via 101 Great Goals – A clip of Dave Henson… I think it was on Radio Five Live… with a song involving the dreaded vuvzela and the Rhianna tune ‘Umbrella’.
I want to post stuff associated with other countries, but I’ve still got a backlog of England songs that need a mention so I’m starting on them now.

These are decent tracks mind, none of your rubbish here. The aim of F&M is to find and post the good and ignore the bad… so don’t come over here looking for J _ _ _ C _ _ _ _ (no not the bloke with the robe and the beard, the other bloke who is bloody everywhere at the moment) because you are not going to find him.

What you are going to find, as I said, are some very decent tunes about England at the World Cup.
Yes by the way, I am banging these out earlier than scheduled just in case it all fecks up.

- Starting this mini-series (of 2) is the Bard of Manchester… and before you say owt I know that John Cooper Clarke is the Bard of Salford… but there’s another resident, the Broughton born lead singer of a certain group who I’m referring to here.

Yes that’s right, Mark E. Smith got on the England/World Cup song bandwagon:

Yes it’s true , the singer songwriter of long time music refuseniks The Fall, Mark E Smith has written a World Cup song with ex-Fall member and collaborator Ed Blaney and Jenny Shuttleworth (aka Girl Peculiar), and here it is in all it’s emotive glory. A world cup song with a Salfordian slant.

” This is not 1974, this is not 1976, you are not at Stamford Bridge, but you are on a Boer Ridge”.

It invokes English players to “take care of the invention of your nation”, “socks up at last or be a brazilian breakfast”.

It’s even got a rousing chorus and a tune to win the world cup for and a hard edged twist at the end. It’ll frighten the wits out of the old enemy too.

Witty and impassioned it’s an appeal for a show of pride from England in South Africa, “remember the pitch in December”, gone should be the days of England teams wilting in the June sunshine and acting like a bunch of big girls blouses. This is possibly the greatest world cup record ever, it’s England’s Heartbeat, sent from heaven.

You’d better get used to the match TV director switching to shots like this:

You will be constantly seeing this image and I can guarantee you’ll hear that noise even in your sleep.

The thing they’ve got on their heads is a Makarapa, which are miners helmet with some junk glued on the top. From Wikipedia:

The origin of the term “Makarapa” goes back to the start of mining in South Africa, makarapa (singular lekarapa), means hard hats normally used by miners (majority being migrant workers) and construction workers. The Makarapa are just decorated to serve purposes such as being used as fan articles, an individual artwork as well as a means of promoting one’s brand in the stadiums as they attract a lot of media attention. They still also afford the wearer protection from missiles thrown at sporting matches, their original reason for being worn.

Many of the wearers take sponsorship so don’t be surprised to see a few of them with plugs for a certain giant soft drinks company.

The other item… ah you know already. It is that dreaded Vuvuzela. Which doesn’t need much more of a description. I will tell you though that they come in different sizes and if they can’t get annoying enough – the smallest one sounds like a crying baby.

So far nobody has used one of these in a World Cup song, so until then…

- I got an instant reaction/response to yesterday’s post:
In that one I was asking for anyone and everyone to contact us if they spotted anything football and world cup music related. I also featured a series of posts by pathfinderpat at Town Full of Losers (who has published a new instalment today). Additionally I “highlighted” a few songs that he originally posted.

One of the mentioned tracks was by John Kongos, a Johannesburg born musician who you will know more from the reworking of his biggest hit by the <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1qf63_happy-mondays-step-on_music"target="_blank">Happy Mondays. The good news is that he’s still out there, still chugging along and that his four sons formed a band named… unsurprisingly or not: Kongos.

I think it was more because they want to promote their own material, but thanks to the message I received from Jesse Kongos and for the video he mentioned I now have an idea for another post…

I am being a bit cynical I know, they are actually a couple of decent tunes.

» More music from South Africa and this time it is via Any Major Dude With Half A Heart in which like I did with Town Full of Losers tracks I’m err… mirroring here one of the songs he first featured.

This track features a player from South Africa who we’ve seen in the Premier League, but he’s not playing tomorrow because he didn’t make the final 23. Commiserations then to Benni McCarthy. Cheer us up with this track, a colaboration which uses a very, very familiar tune…

» TKZee and Benni McCarthy – Shibobo

Half Hearted Dude has this and many more SA tracks which are all worth a listen.
Plus that post is the first in a series.

I was inspired to write this post because of a newly discovered World Cup fantasy league. This one though has a very different spin on what you usually see.

Now there are hundreds of fantasy football games out there, but many people can’t be arsed fiddling about with all that budgeting and team selection and transfers… too much time.. takes too much work…

» Which is why we have the WORLD CUP PREDICTION LEAGUE here on Football & Music.

(Still open for signups – gathering together some nice prizes as we speak)

There are some of you though who do like to pore over every minutia, every details on the players, their performances, their stats… Well this fantasy league isn’t for you.

This one is the sort of thing that appeals to those of you like your footie distractions. It’s for people that are not bovvered about the dull reality of the football grind and don’t take things too seriously.

This new league is one where (if they were still playing) you would select <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RKo_50sWW4"target="_blank">Rivaldo or Roberto Rojas for your squad. But where you CAN choose <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjCneugi52s"target="_blank">CRonaldo (or Rooney) – and especially <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLUxMRYJAso"target="_blank">Thierry Henry for your <a href="http://www.fantasycheatersleague.com/"target="_blank">Fantasy Cheaters League team.

I’ve joined, and although there might actually be a little bit of research to find out which particular player likes to pull a shirt or con the ref, it doesn’t take that long to select your “favourite” snake in the grass. Plus you can change the selection any time up until the tournament starts, then after that there are transfer windows.

Again a reminder that the F&M WORLD CUP PREDICTION LEAGUE is open. Hurry along now.

To the music and some songs about the two subjects in the image at the top of the post…
If you need to be told who and what then you are in the wrong place. What are you doing here ?

- Starting with the event which was more recent… These about Monsieur Henry, who after this World Cup will be joining the <strike>Harlem Globetrotters</strike> New York Red Bulls to see out his career.

All three songs go with the take a familiar tune and add new lyrics to it, approach.

» The first being a rewritten take on the A-ha hit Take On Me:

» Next we have to the tune of The Killers – Human:

» Lastly this is one based on a Christy Moore song:

- Moving onto a collection about the current Argentina coach, who (if his own ego is to be believed) will be trying to walk on water after this tournament.

There are two songs which are really, really crap. Noted here for the records but can be instantly dismissed as a terrible waste of time.

» There’s one from <a href="http://www.divshare.com/download/11549843-62e"target="_blank">The Business and one from <a href="http://www.divshare.com/download/11549876-282"target="_blank">Bad Manners.

- These next two are original compositions – The first one I found thanks to <a href="http://www.kungfuology.com/andybest/2010/04/more-pinkberry-diego-maradona.html"target="_blank">Andy Best, who is a Scouser currently living and working in Shanghai, China. It is from Shanghai-based group called <a href="http://www.douban.com/artist/pinkberry/"target="_blank">Pinkberry.
Andy sez:

“The song opens up with the line “Maradona was a stoner” and goes on to mention stuff like the hand of god and the fact he wore number ten. In fact the chorus is ‘I am number one, but I wear number ten’ It even references his time at Napoli.”

Saving the best until last…

This one from <a href="http://www.catmalojian.com/"target="_blank">Cat Malojian who are [according to the tags on the page] experimental indie prog folk folk indie singer / songwriters in the United Kingdom.

Back in February I did a couple of posts looking at the 2006 England/World Cup songs:
There was a collection from the showbiz types – and a grouping from your normal punters.

Because of the amount of emails received and the sheer number of contenders out there, I’m going to do this same format plus will be splitting them into two groups. – Starting with some members of joe public who are trying to make a few quid out of this and maybe get a mention on the radio:

Who are they ? Outraze.

Where are the from ? Banbury, Oxfordshire.

Is there a band bio ? Found this on their Indiestore page:

“OUTRAZE are a Dirty, Ballsy Rock’n'Roll band with influences coming from the legends of the past 50 years including The Beatles, Oasis, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Smiths, Stone Roses & The Jam etc.”

What’s their England song ? This is England:
