Hoddle and Waddle's first crime - Diamond LightsI have the sad duty of informing you that this thing to the left wasn’t the only time.

They dared to enter the studio again… plus Hoddle by himself again and again and again…

As previously mentioned on F&M the original mullets recorded some stuff separately.

Waddle duetted with Basile Boli.
But the God botherer really went out to make sure it just wasn’t the disabled who despised him - fans of Queen, the Beatles and John Lennon were insulted too.

You sick sadistic bastard Hoddle. What did we ever do to you…?

Not satisfied with ruining some of our favourite songs you went out to do the double when managing the England team.

But karma came back and bit him in the ass. He’s been cast out into the football wilderness of telly pundity, never to manager a team again.

(A few weeks back the vacancy at Southampton came up and Hodd’s name was mentioned, but the Saints went for Nigel Pearson instead - the same Nigel Pearson who was in caretaker charge of Newcastle when Man USA put six past them.)

I am sorry to drag this should have been forgotten and buried/why do you do this to us other offence to music to light. It’s part of my job and please don’t shoot the piano player.

Or actually… do shoot him. I think he also produced the single…

Glenn and Chris - It's Goodbye

» Glenn and Chris - It’s Goodbye

- Why was it Glenn before Chris and not the other way round ? Did they flip and coin ?

Extra info: As you can see from the above pic there was a free flexidisc included and if you dare (go on.. I double dare !) you can buy the single with that interview here.

And that's not all: I found an ebay auction in which there was a cross promotion with Miller Lite. Yes a couple of sportsmen promoting beer. Very sad.
You can view a photo of the single which included a poster of the two here.

Sorry…what…? You are a sadist and want to punish yourself or a friend with the other one…?

Oh all right, since you hate yourself that much:

After their historic win today I’m going to repost this one from November last year.

In the original item I posted a couple of songs to coincide with the FA Cup 2nd in the hope that a non EPL football team would adopt it.

As I said back then:

…Obviously no club goes out and records a single for the FA Cup unless they get to the final, but there are lots of teams who never get that opportunity and I am asking why not.

If you support a lower league team you know that you’ll never get to see Wembley Way (unless you do well in the Johnson’s Paint Trophy).
You will never get the chance to buy their single only to find it again years later and be reminded of the joy/pain from that particular year.

So if you get through to the later the rounds why not release this as a single…

I say then to you Barnsley FC, since you don’t have any songs… (you don’t, I searched extensively and found none*) take this one and make it your own:

» We’re Gonna Win The Cup

* unless you know of any. If you do please mail me.

I want to pay tribute to the lowest league positioned team in this weekend’s FA Cup Quarter Finals.

Bristol Rovers after they won promotion to League One

Imagine that. Playing in the old Division 3 and in the last 8 for the FA Cup.
Well done chaps and best of British to you.

They are playing high flying West Brom in the late kick off on Sunday and obviously the odds are stacked against them, but who’s to say. Nobody expected Barnsley to turn Liverpool over…

I went on a research trip to find any songs or music associated with the club and found on their Wikipedia page this bit:

The song which is synonymous with Bristol Rovers is “Goodnight, Irene“, which was written by Leadbelly. It is sung by fans in support of the team.

Opinions differ as to how this came about but it is thought to have become popular in the 1950s when a version of the song was in the British charts - the line “sometimes I have a great notion to jump in the river and drown” - seemed to be particularly apt when Rovers lost as the Bristol Frome flows alongside the old Eastville ground.

Another theory is that it was sung at a fireworks display at the Stadium the night before a Home game against Plymouth Argyle in the fifties. During the game the following day, Rovers were winning quite comfortably and the few Argyle supporters present began to leave early prompting a chorus of “Goodnight Argyle” from the Rovers supporters - the tune stuck and “Irene” became the club song.

(The name Leadbelly might ring a bell - Nirvana covered one of his songs )

There’s no need for me to tell the whole story behind the song or about Leadbelly because Pitch Invasion has this very excellent article about the whole thing. Seriously. Take some time and go and read it.

In the meantime I’ll post the original and a couple of different takes on the much covered song:

Beckham and his Bo Derek cornrows

I’m surprised that the Beeb and none of the others have reported on this yet - a Press Association news item released yesterday:

England set for USA clash

The Football Association are close to sealing an agreement for a friendly between England and the USA at Wembley on May 28…

… A friendly against the USA would inevitably lead to hopes that David Beckham would play for England in order to boost interest in the match in the States.

If Beckham is not picked by England manager Fabio Capello for the friendly against France in Paris later this month then the May date would be the next opportunity for the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder to win his 100th cap.

» Full article

So Derek will get his 100th and final cap.

As mentioned in the item there is another friendly at the end of this month. Fabio has said that he will only pick old Goldenbolls if he is fit and playing well, but the MLS season still hasn’t started yet. They are still doing pre-season friendlies throughout Asia.

Now this convenient arrangement has come along is a perfect opportunity to give Derek a proper send off into semi-retirement.

- Before I continue an explanation of why he’s called Derek.
The origins of the name came from this mention in a popbitch mailout a few years ago:

After this the members of the PB Board started to call him (Bo) Derek Beckham.
So now you know.

But back to the game in hand…

Can anyone see him being picked again after the financial opportunity ? (which really is what this match is all about).

One last blowout and then say goodnight Derek.

Music-wise and it’s another tenuous connection I’m afraid, but a good one. It comes via the I’m Not Always So Stupid blog and a bit of post-C86 jangly indie pop:

» Mousefolk - Where’s David Tonight

A question Skeletor was asking a few years ago

Sadly apart from this discography, there’s little to no information about the band.

Additional:

I read that post on I’m Not Always So Stupid a while back and made a mental note to come back and download the song, but then forgot about it. I went back today but sadly the link was dead. I then searched to see if anyone else had posted anything and found this post to a couple of albums which were ripped to mp3 from the original vinyl..

I’m not sure if that blog is the originator of the post, but either way it gave me a chance to get the Mousefolk track and to discover some other forgotten recordings.

“…two of my top favorite records here, taken from the golder era of indie pop … Airspace! (Breaking Down Records, 1989) and its sequel Airspace II (Breaking Down Records, 1990) were two charity compilations, released in Bristol … artists participating here were the best people of the indie pop scene back then …”

On the Airspace II album there are some recognisable names including The Wedding Present who cover the Penetration song - Don’t Dictate. There’s also Cud, Mega City 4, The Groove Farm and a stand out track from The Darling Buds:

» The Darling Buds - Shame On You (Slightlydelic Mix)

Not related to the subject of the post in any way. Just thought I’d take this opportunity to post this little gem.

The crowds at Goodison Park

Unlike the mysterious beginning at Stoke, or a pick of the pops selection at Crystal Palace, the history of the running out music as used by Everton is well documented.

I was going to pose another open question as to where, when and why and how the theme from Z Cars is used at Goodison, but Wikipedia answered that for me:

“On matchdays players walk out to the theme tune to Z-Cars, called ‘Johnny Todd’, a traditional Liverpool children’s song collected in 1890 by Frank Kidson which tells the story of a sailor betrayed by his lover while away at sea.”

» Theme From Z-Cars

Further to this Wikipedia adds:

“Based on the traditional folk song Johnny Todd, the Z-Cars theme tune was arranged by Fritz Spiegl and performed by John Keating and his Orchestra. The single reached #5 on the UK singles chart in April 1962.

It was soon adopted by fans of the football club Everton, who are based in Liverpool near to where the programme supposedly took place. To this day, the theme tune is still played as the team come out onto the pitch at the beginning of all their home matches.”

I am very familiar with the Z-Cars theme, but not the song Johnny Todd so I had a dig around and found the lyrics here and here (opens in new window). The first couple of verses »

Johnny Todd he took a notion
For to cross the ocean wide.
There he left his true love a-weeping
Waiting by the Liverpool tide.

For a week she wept full sorely,
Tore her hair and wrung her hands
Till she met with another sailor
Walking on the Liverpool sands.

Then I happened upon a few artists who have covered it. Including and probably obviously by the (Liverpool) Spinners, Bob Dylan, some Irish folk singers and even a sea shanty. (Although looking at the lyrics it could claim to be more as a shanty than a folk song).

The Spinners
There was another group a few years later who also called themselves the Spinners. They were known in the UK as the Detroit Spinners

» The Spinners - Johnny Todd
Bob Dylan
This is from The Genuine Basement Tapes, which is a collection of demo recordings. A bit of a racket even for Bob.

» Bob Dylan - Johnny Todd
The Clancy Brothers
The Clancy Brothers were an Irish folk music singing group, most popular in the 1960s, who are often credited with popularizing Irish traditional music in the United States.
